In ancient India, established trading networks thrived, with key merchants like Saddalputta and Anāthapiṇḍada playing vital roles in commerce, as documented in historical records. Saddalaputta, for example, managed 500 pottery shops in Vaishali. Artisans and traders were organized into guilds, each led by designated leaders, which fostered the emergence of specialized crafts through local systems.

The concept of ‘Dāna,’ or charitable giving, was integral to business conduct, encouraging merchants to partake in societal philanthropy. Indian traders engaged in international trade, establishing connections across Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa .
